Early Hominids

Quite excited. Paul Walsh and I convened for one of our too-infrequent Early Hominids sessions last night in Leeds, and it felt like a good one. We achieved a real velocity in places that had my head spinning and pulse racing. Usual schtick to start with – we met for a couple of early evening beers and pizza, then took a taxi to a little rehearsal space on Meanwood Road, plugged in (much use of fantastically unstable gear built by Bugbrand and Crowphonics), cracked open another couple of beers, turned the room lights off and the multiple little strobe lights on (they act like LFOs for the light-sensitive synths) then it’s open up and bleed for the next 2-3 hours.

But this time we had half an idea to try to steer the jams into more “pop” territory, ostensibly to record a ”United”-style sweetener to fill the first side of a 7″ single to be be backed with a stringent edit of our hilarious and room-clearing performance at Dewsbury Socialist Club last year. Well, as “pop” as improvised overloaded electronics recorded live to 2-track can get…

Ah, maybe we didn’t quite get that Cheryl Cole-meets-Nerve Net Noise vibe the world needs now, but we got to some hot spots we’d never been to before, some of which might just be excisable for jukebox-friendly consumption. So, here are some short rough cuts of a few of the results, straight to 2-track, live in Leeds, 10 February 2011:
